Moving the crossmember

I just installed a 400 tranny and the car came with a 350. Does anyone know how many spaces forward or backwards I move the crossmember?
I can't seem to line the holes up.

what kind of car are we speaking? I've always slid the crossmember forward or back (depending on what is going on) and dropped one bolt in then slid the crossmember around until the remaining three holes line up.

A 72 cutlass convertible. I'll try your method. I may have just been going to fast and became impatient.
