I ordered a Muncie M22Z today from Jodie's Transmissions. It has an Autogear HD case, a roller front bearing and 2.98 first gear. I plan on running it with 3.08 gears in my 72 442 behind a BTR stroked 455.

I should be able to run 65 to 70 mph at 2500-2700rpms

I made this choice because I have been hearing that the perfectfit TKO600 would not guarantee that there would be no hacking up of my trans tunnel..

Anyone had any experience with the M22z trans? Any suggestions / recommendations?

Old reply... but how do you like the M22z? I am considering an original M20, or the Auto Gear M20 or M22w or perhaps M22z. I have a 3.42 rear end.

 

Had one 40 years ago in my '56 Chevy behind a no-torque 301 + 4:11 gears.
After replacing the synchros and installing Hurst competition plus linkage w/steel bushings, the throws were about 3 inches!
Loved that trans and don't remember 'missing' any shifts, and I'd wind that puppy to 7500!!
Did loose a few 'holeshots' w/a 1 legger, but with 3x2's, usually caught them by the end of 1st.
Don't understand how they can call a wide-ratio a M-22 though - I aways thought the 22 designation partially refered to the 2:20 first gear. [probably did, originally]

 

I did the auto to 4-spd swap on Skryla's car.That is a sweet transmission.It consisted of all aftermarket pieces,like the Auto Gear main case,mid-plate,and tail housing,along with the better internals,but it has the fit & appearance of teh original Munice.I had one of these built a few years back,for one of my 70's,and it works great.

 

Installed M22W(2.56 non roller brg) in friend's big block Chevelle 3 years ago, very nice piece. So far has taken some good beatings & it shifts very nicely under full power. We had changed 4.xx to a 3.08 so it was more driveable longer distances, thus the "W" variant.
