Leaking Shifter Seal 400TH

I spotted somewhere on youtube a fella replacing the shifter shaft seal on a 350TH using a small screwdriver to pry the seal out then tapping the new one in with a proper sized socket. Does anyone know if this can be done on a 400?

If I do need to drain the pan, is it just a matter of unbolting the shaft from within and pushing it out before replacing the seal? I have read the manual and researched what I can on this site but it remains unclear to me how to accomplish this.

I know they make a tool to do that seal, and it's fairly cheap...$10.-20. I think. I don't know if you can pull the seal with the shaft in the tranny.

There is a Kent-Moore tool that lets you do this, but you may also be able to drill a couple of small holed in the metal part of the seal, screw in sheet metal screws, and pry the seal out that way. Use wheel bearing grease to capture any chips.

trans seal

that tool works great for removing the seal without marking up the shaft .I would recommend making up a sleeve from thin plastic to wrap around the shaft when you get to installing new seal,i have had the edges where the linkage bolts on be very sharp and cut the new seal(once)

Thanks guys, so I assume you can remove the U portion of the shaft (where the linkage connects to) and pull the seal out using this tool?

yes,you don't have to drain the pan either.the tool threads into the seal and you turn the bolt on the middle of the tool in and it removes the seal.the tool makes this so easy

Perfect! Thanks Mr Olds, Joe and JC. Your help is greatly appreciated. As usual I needed
an overly detailed explanation.
