Jetaway vs Super Turbine

Quick question: are the Olds Jetaway and the Buick Super Turbine the same trans? More specifically will they interchange? Thanks.

Yes and yes. Pontiac also used it. Note that the 1964-67 Buick and Olds versions of the ST300 came with the switch pitch converter. The 68-69 versions and Poncho version did not.

If you do come across a st300 with the switch pitch converter, several Buick guys would pay for that core. They are getting pretty hard to find.

St 300

So would they also want Jetaway cores? Why just the ST 300?

One more time.

The 1964-1969 Jetaway IS a Super Turbine 300. "Jetaway" was just a name that the Olds marketing department came up with to make it sound unique.

They are pretty plentiful on this site. How many do you want?

Seriously? I've refused them when offered to me for free, and scrapped at least one.
I think most of us have.

If you have a web site or other way of posting these for sale, it might save a whole bunch of trips to the scrap yard.

I still have the one with torque converter that was removed from my car attached to the 330 if any of the Buick guys are interested. It was serviced and checked out about 2 years prior to being removed.

I once advertised a 1967 330 core for $100, or $75 if you also took the Junkaway...

FYI, I ended up selling the forged crank to Chris Witt and scrapping the trans and remains of the motor.

The switch pitch converters (if compatible with switch pitch 400 transmission) might be valuable. I have heard that the smaller converter is desirable for the 400 transmissions.

That was the trick back in the day. Today, I'd be very wary of installing a used, HALF CENTURY OLD converter with worn internal moving parts on my fresh trans.

More to the point, the whole purpose of the switch pitch it to provide a converter with two different stall speeds. Is the high stall of the stock converter not high enough for your engine? Or does one do this just because "everybody sez" you need to run a higher stall converter. This is one of those things that people do without thinking it through.

After reading this several times, I think I understand your question.

The PG and the ST300 are NOT the same transmission.
Never were. Never will be.
No parts interchange between them, as far as I know, except maybe some compression fittings.

The Buick Super-Turbine and the Oldsmobile Jetaway, on the other hand ARE the same transmission.

Go back and re-read the thread. Sometimes the give and take can be confusing.

We have been trying to tell you they are not the same transmission. The ST300 aka Jetaway in Olds speak has nothing in common with the Chevy Powerglide other than they are both 2 speeds.

Nobody even mentioned the Powerglide until you brought it up.

I have seen the guys on v8buick.com looking for the smaller diameter switch-pitch converters to use in the sp th400. I would guess they cut em, put some new stuff in and maybe restall one or both stall speeds and weld it back up.
That site is down for some maintenance at the moment but if you want to venture over I bet someone will show some interest.

The question was about the ST300 and the Jetaway (WHICH ARE THE SAME TRANSMISSION). Where did the Powerglide come from?

Nice guide. Could be very useful.

Wonder if there is any way to sticky a thread on someone else's board?

Thanks.

st300

Dacco-Detroit has plenty of them. Catalog list B-1 & B-2 as variable vane torq convertors. I bought a 11" and 12". Ran about $200 for both. 12" =2400 hi stall, 11" =2800 high stall. http://www.daccoinc.com/ Bought mine out of local tranny shop. No shipping since he orders 10-20 convertors at a time. They have a warehouse in Crossville, Tenn. Hope this helps. Had them for about 7 years no problems so far.
