Hard to get into reverse

I have a 79 cutlass with a 4 speed out of 81 Camaro 1-4 is fine
Is there a trick to getting these in reverse ?
i have to put a lot of pressure to the left than up to get it in reverse.
Any tips to making this easier ?

Has the shifter mechanism been cleaned, lubed and the shift linkage adjusted? Fluid level good with correct fluid?

Define "a lot of pressure". The shifter is spring loaded to guard against accidentally catching reverse when downshifting into first. Of course, adjustment of the shift rods, proper adjustment of the clutch, and internal condition of the trans also matter. Keep in mind that reverse is not synchronized. Is the problem with the pressure to the left on the stick or the force required to move the shifter into R?

I would say it’s the force required to get it there
I watched a few videos and noticed some shops say to push down and left up
I’ll try lubricating as well
