floor shifter to column conversion.

Thats right.........you heard me...........lol

I recently bought a 72 cutllass where the PO installed a B&M ratchet shifter and i hate it. My vehicle stock has a bench seat and column shifter and that is what i want to put it back to. How easy of a job is this? Is it as simple as removing the cable from the floor shifter and rerouting it to the sterring column somewhere. I dont hav ton of experience with this but i am a pretty compatent person when it somes to being technical so im sure i can figure it out with a little help. Thank, this forum is a great place to gain knowledge!.

The older car$ use a series of metal linkage bars that attach to the side of the transmission. Here's a picture from a 66 olds 88.

lol........Thats funny cause yesterday when i was trying to figure out an electrical issue i saw this bar hang down from my sterrinf column next to the firewall. so where exactly on the tranny doesit connect to. i believe i stll have the stock th350 tranny. i will get under there and take a peak. besides this linkage is there anything else i need to reroute. what abut the cable from the aftermarket shifter? what do i do with that thing. Here is a pic of my shifter and the column. That red cable coming through the floor in front of the shifter is the one im talking about. Where do i reroute that too? Thanks for all your help.

The bar hanging off the steering column is part of what you need. Forget the cable you are looking at, that is the aftermarket shifters cable, not a factory part as such it is not used.

You are looking for a bracket on your frame rail , a cross shaft that connects to the bar you found and also to the shift bracket on the side of your trans.

The bracket on your trans might work but I would need a picture of it to be sure. The bracket is probably still on your frame. I would bet that the cross shaft is all you need. I just noticed you don't have the shift lever on the column as well. (of course)

It should not be to hard to come up with the pieces you are missing around here. Just check out what you already have and I am sure some one can hook you up with what you need.

That shifter cable on your car cost about 40.00 dollars new and your shifter and cable with the mounting bracket on the trans would bring $75.00 to $100 bucks aroud here. Should cover the cost of fixing it and then some.

If your needing anything I'm parting out a 1971 Cutlass 4 door right now. I should have all the linkage. I've also got several extra steering columns if you don't have the parts for your column shift anymore. I'm located up in Medford Oregon, what part of Nor Cal are you in? John
