I bet if you start the motor with the pan and filter off you'll get a lot of the fluid flushed...

But I'm not gonna try it!

I was thinking of starting it with just the return line disconnected but im pretty sure running the pump dry aint the best idea. I was thinking compressed air through one side and draining it out the return line . Eric do you know how many qts. go with the filter change . I know my dads th350 too about close to 5

I'm afraid I haven't a clue.

When I've done it, I've taken a bath in ATF, then just kept pouring new quarts in until the car moved again.

Did you upgrade the pan?
I always add a drain plug when first buying a vehicle and changing the filter.
Get a pan with a drain plug.
Once you get the filter changed and re fill..drive the car a short time and change again.
I always watch for sales on trans fluid and change mine pretty often.

once you get the filter changed and the new fluid put in you can dissconnect one line to the cooler, start it up and take like two litres out then put in two new etc etc. until the fluid comin out is clean. wastes a bit of fluid but is relatively effective. On just dropping the pan and changing filter I would imagine it would be 6 or so litres. but to flush the system probably take a dozen or so and the system holds something like 11 litres i think. correct me if im wong

Correction: Fruity Japanese and French cars contain litres of oil.

American cars have QUARTS.

Lol. Eric that's funny. Anywho for now I'll just keep the stock pan. Trying to figure out some issues with my trans. If my trans has to be fixed and dropped I'm building a th350 to free up a few ponies to help get my car in the 12's. Got a few things to figure out before I get a deep pan with a drain plug. So does anyone actually know how many quarts appx. It will take. I know the th350 is a little over 4 .

Motor's repair manual says 5 qts..but 4 would be safe.
Heat up the car,go for a ride, and top it off correctly.

Dumb question from a guy who has never had an automatic trans, but am building a car now that will have a th400.
Free up a few ponies with a th350? Are we talking weight, the fact that it will be newly rebuilt? or is there an advantage to the th350 that I don't know about in comparison to the th400?

The turbo 350 has less weight and fewer clutches so it frees up a few horsepower,but..
I like the automatic electronic up shift from first gear chirping the tires on the Turbo 4.

The th400 is semi manual. If I do a th350 I'm building it my self and doing a reverse manual valve body. For now I'm gonna tinker with the th400 . It developed a soft shift after the new converter so I'm gonna do a new filter and get it to the track and compare the numbers to last year. If its working good I won't mind the soft shifts. If it drops performance the th350 is gettong built.
