Factory WOT shift RPM 1986 442

I have a new to me, 1986 442 un molested with 66,000 miles. The WOT 1-2 shift shows 5500-5600 on the factory Tach. I know that the factory Tach can be a" little off" but that poor 307, sounds un happy being twisted that high. What is the correct WOT shift RPM for 1986 442?
Thank you

I don't own one but I would not take it above 5,000 RPM's.

Agreed. Not only do you risk blowing it up, but it won't make any power up there anyway.

Put a real tach on it first, just to verify where it actually shifts. If I remember c, the 87 442 I had would shift around 4900-5000.

Unless someone has played around with it in the past, I bet the tach is much further off than you think. The vast majority of 2004Rs shift much lower than 5k, it takes some effort to raise the shift points.

Thank you matt69olds

I have spent way too much time, trying to find the answer on the factory WOT shift RPM. I know that the shift calibration used on the 442 2004R's, is unique compared
to regular 2004R's, and it has a higher shift point. My "Butt Dyno " says the shift points are way above the engine"s power peak. I will hook up an auxiliary Tach, and report back.

The tachometers can be way off. I also had a 87 442 on the road many moons ago just like Matt69olds. And concur with everything he wrote in post #4.

That makes sense, the 83-84 H/O and 85 442 are more aggressive than the 86-87 442s. Their code OZ 200-4Rs shift the 1-2 at 5200 rpm. (2-3 at 4900 rpm and 3-4 at 4400 rpm) https://dgv4.xr793.org/wp-content/up...bile-Hurst.pdf

Its not, the code 9 cam is similar to original 442 cams. Code 9s are supposed to be more than cruisers, even if they fell short of making a pronounced difference. They were adequate performers in their time. But you had to rip into them just to do that. I raced my 442 at Englishtown for years, picking up 2 seconds in performance. She was absolutely screaming on her best passes. All modifications were just tweaks, including tightening the TV cable for maximum performance. Ended up crossing the finish line around 5000 rpm in drive, over and over again. 200 passes and never hurt her...

1986 442 is a code KZF 200-4R.
1-2: 4800 rpm
2-3: 4500 rpm
3-4: 4000 rpm

Thanks to 88hurstolds@ https://www.gbodyolds.com/forum/olds...identification post #1.

P.S. Keep in mind maximum performance is achieved via overshooting the engines peak hp rpm on shifts. My 87 was very healthy and chirped on the factory 1-2 shift when I got her with around 100,000 miles. 1987 code 9 engines make peak advertised hp at 4000 rpm, and are also mated to KZF 200-4Rs. The 1987 442s redline was 5500 rpm.

Thank you 69CSHC

I should have tried here first, rather than wearing my fingers out, googling, searching, all in vain.

That is a lot of valuable information that you have provided me and others.

I still haven't had the opportunity, to verify my factroy tach.
