Dual Gate swap out
Dual Gate swap out
Im trying to nail down what exactly what I will need for a swap over
to a dual gate shifter from original automatic already on the
console of a 72 Olds Cutlass Convertible.
I hope to purchase my Olds by this spring and I was just trying get an idea of how much additional I will have to buget for.
From what I have read in other threads I should be able to purchase an Olds Dual Gate His/hers shifter $400 or so,. use the original console,..
just cut out along the preferations that are already there from the factory
for the larger dual gate top plate. I have to have special floor mounting brackets for the new hurst shifter..roughly $45. What about cable/linkage? New cable or modify the original?
What else should I plan/budget for on this project? Is this a reasonably easy
swap?

I'm pretty sure the dual gate uses a different cable, but someone else will have to verify that.
The console has a long skinny plastic insert with woodgrain on the top. The dual gate uses a different one. I know the woodgrain is available repop, not sure if the plastic piece it fits into is.
Not a real difficult swap, and one of those little details that make the cool factor go way up

2blu442 , thanks for the reponse. I will start tracking down that
additional piece/ cost and I will plan on a new cable too. Thanks for the
help!
I know it is an unnecesssary expense but like you said...it adds that
coolness factor. Just something about looking in that car and seeing rally pack gauges, hurst dual gate shifter, and a 4 spoke sport steering wheel.
thanks, Keith

I know what you mean!!
The cable can not be modified to work as the shifter end needs to be longer to go into the DG housing.
You can modify your console. That is no problem, but as stated you will need a different top plate that is actually 2 pieces.
There isn't really any major trick to bolting it to the floor. I just used the rear hole from the original shifter to line everything up. You will need to make 2 new holes in the floor. Just make sure to use a SLIGHTLY smaller drill bit so that the self tapping screws have something to bite when you screw them into the floor.

If the car is already a floorshift/console,then it's a little easier to do,and less parts to get.The cable bracket & selector lever on the trans is the same, but the cable itself is different. You can cut your existing console,as you mentioned,to fit the dual-gate.Here is what you will need:
Hurst dual-gate shifter for 70-72 Cutlass/442,with **** & light bracket
Shifter mounting brackets for 70-72 Cutlass/442 with dual-gate
Dual-gate shifter cable
Dual-gate top plates, front & back. If you have a real nice original auto top plate, leave it alone, but if it is damaged around the selector area, then it would be a good candidate to cut.You can cut it to use as the front top plate, and then you would just need the rear top plate.
If you are looking for a complete package,I do have complete dual-gate console set-ups,or individual pieces.

Thank you guys for all the great info and help. I really appreciate everything. I feel
better about the swapout now and I have a better idea of what I will need to prepare
for ..
507OLDS - how much would the dual gate / console set up (complete package) cost?
what condition is the console in? What condition is the shifter in?
Do you have some pics? my email is: kdavis@hanotek.com

My complete dual-gate console set-ups are $950.00 plus the shipping.Everything is restored. These are the best possible set-ups you can get.I just shipped one last thursday, and I am finishing some now, with one already spoken for.
The biggest problem is finding an original console in mint condition. You need a nice one to start with, and I am pretty picky about each piece.

wow that sounds great Brian. I think I would rather do that anyway... just swap
out the whole console and shifter together as a package and drop in a mint condition
repl with hurst shifter, top plates, cable /brackets. That way I can hang onto my originals if they ever needs to go back in. I will hit you up on your dual-gate console set up a once I track down that 72 olds I am after!! I dont mind waiting to get a really nice looking setup.
