Diff style Hurst shifters?

Just curious... in all the pics I have seen so far, the holes circled in red below do not have notches, but this one does. Were there variations? This be a 3138 shifter.

Yes,there are different styles. Those levers pictured, have smaller holes, and use a rubber bushing/gromet. The holes without the notches are larger, and they take the brass or steel bushings & thrust washers.

Curious... if a rubber grommet goes in the holes, do the notches serve any function? Also, are they correct for 1972? thx

The rubber gromets are notched to lock into the notches in the levers.

So if I order some repros from Fusick, ILT or whatever... I may get the wrong rods?

The rods will fit. either style. The shifter levers without the holes are larger holes, and they use a steel or brass bushing with the rod, whereas the shifter levers with the notches have a smaller hole, and the rod is a snug fit in that hole. The rubber grommets in that application do not act as a sleeve or bushing. They lock in place & are used to take up any side-to-side play in the connection.

k thanks. Is this shifter style (#3138 w/notches) correct for 72, or can be 70-72? Just curious.

70-72. Some people will drill-out the notched holes,so the bushing kits will work with them.I have found that the rods usually wear before the holes in the levers,so if you use new/reproduction rods, everything should be nice & crisp.

Looking at the kit ILT sells for example... theirs is for the 'round' holes?

Yes,I have that kit.The 3 brass bushing inserts will not fit your levers unless you drill the hole size larger.
I have also seen a steel type of bushing insert, with a thinner sleeve.I think those are a Hurst product.

Still don't understand the whole thing really. ILT only has that bushing set, and all the shifter/lever pics I have seen so far have round holes with no notches. Could this 3138 shifter be from some non-Olds 70-72 car?

Curious what the CSM and Assembly Manual for 1972 says. Have not looked yet.

I still have a complete, unmolested 4-spd set-up,from a 72 supreme convertible, and that shifter has the notched holes in the levers, with the rubber grommets.

So there is the rubber grommet, then a washer/cotter pin or something on each one?

Did the 72 CS convert. come with a M20? Any pics?

Yes,the 72 convertible came with the M20. All 72 Cutlass/442's came with the M20,if they were a 4-spd.I'll take some pictures of that shifter,or another one,as I have more than one with the rubber grommets.

I sold a few set-ups in the last few months, since you inquired before, and some of them,I am doing the install swaps.I am just finishing the 71 442 convertible with the sienna interior, that I posted pictures of before, and with the pilot bearing adapter that I had made. It's up & running, and I drove it a few miles so far.I plan on doing some minore adjustmants & taking it out one more time. Then the owner's driving it back home on the highway.Troy Thornton wanted a complete set-up as well,so I need to check with him to see if his customer is still interested.I have a few more swaps scheduled, then we'll see what I have when I'm done.
This car isn't a frame-off resto,like some,but I only do things one way.Every piece that I install is restored,rebuilt,replated,etc.
