clutch or transmission issue ?

70' 442 4 speed M21 what are/ or could be the culprit involved with a hurst shifter NOT going through gears. To be clear about the issue, manually not being able to shift the vehicle. i pulled out of a parking area onto a major boulevard ----1st gear no problem 2nd gear ---slight issue of sticking up--- 3rd- shifter would not / could not be moved. could the thro-out bearing be the issue ? transmission was gone through and re-sealed about 10 years ago. i've put 23000 miles on it since 2010. i get a slight shuttering from the clutch when an uphill situation from a dead stop. i have never turned the tires on this car --speed for me, i have no interest. any suggestions as what to look at ?

I would check for worn bushings and adjustment first thing. If still problems gotta start checking everything.

If bushings worn, onsider steel shifter bushings, always liked them over the nylon.

Make sure clutch is disengaging completely.

As said 1st would suspect the shifter, maybe dry and check neutral alignment.... it could need a rebuild.

X3, sounds like a shifter problem. Can you shift gears with the engine off?

I'll agree with the others. This sounds like a shifter linkage adjustment issue. I'd certainly start there. The Competition Plus has an alignment hole in the levers that locks them in the neutral position. You're supposed to remove the rods, slide a pin or drill bit in the holes in the arms to line them all up, then adjust the rods to ensure there is no preload on anything while in neutral. Also be sure the bushings in the linkage pivots are in good shape. The first thing I always do is replace the plastic bushings with the Hurst metal ones.

You didn't mention the fluid in the transmission, so revisit what is in there. Long ago I came in to some Lucas 'hub oil' and tried it in a Packard three speed trans instead of traditional hide based gear oil. You couldn't engage second and high which have bronze synchros pushing as hard as possible on the shifter when driving, vehicle at rest idling no problem. Drained and replaced with traditional stinky 90w gear oil shifts like butter with one pinky. This assumes the clutch fully disengages when depressing the pedal. Good luck ~
