Checking the fluid

Uggh, I'm just not getting it.

Every time I check the transmission fluid in my '66 Toronado's THM425, I'm dumfounded. According to the CSM, warm the engine approx 15 mins. Yep, I take it out for a little drive to get it good and hot then come back to the garage, nice level surface, and check the fluid with the car in park and the engine idling. Alright, straightforward. All boxes checked. This should be a piece of cake.

I check the oil. One side of the dipstick appears to be just over the full mark. Flip the dipstick around and it appears to be wildly overfilled. I see a bit of fluid coming out of the vent (which would indicate overfill). I check it 10 times as I can't believe my eyes......yep, exact same thing every time.

So basically I have no idea what I'm doing. Any of you been through this or is it just me being a bonehead? It's a friggin' dipstick.

Just keep pulling it out and wipe it off. About 2-3 times will yield good results As long as its between the full and add you are OK. Ive been doing this for so long I do it cold.
When the last time you serviced the fluid & filter?

Two days ago. I pulled the pan, changed the filter and the fluid.

The engine may get warmed up, but the transmission only warms up by driving it. The lubrication system in the engine and the lubrication in the transmission are two completely different things.

Make sure you pull the dipstick and wipe it, then insert the dipstick for 8-10 seconds to get the valid reading.

Yeah, I drove it for 15 minutes or so.

Use the lowest reading.

Only thing I can figure is when pulling the dipstick its rubbing on the inside of the tube and picking up some fluid. That’s my theory.
