Can we use Water Temp gauge for Transmission Oil Temp

Hello Everyone,

I'm planning to buy a set of Green line gauges
one water temp gauge 311CC, and Sender 280EA
one voltmeter 375T
one oil pressure gauge 306BB and sender 279a
Critical question is I want oil temperature gauge from green line.. what is your advise? i thought i could use mechanical water temp gauge 361AT72... but i'm not sure..

Or i can use a electrical gauge with this sender

needs your comment ASAP since i have to order those units , I'm rebuilding my 455 and this order takes ages to come from U.S to my country

If the gauges are electrical, then the sender units are the issue. Will the sender unit hold up with oil vs water? If so, then I see no issues. I would look for an oil temp sender unit, if that is what Summit is selling.

If the gauge is mechanical, then the gauge needs to be able to sense the temp of the oil, which is probably done via borden tube. That will be what is to be compatible with the hot oil.

Best bet is to go with electric gauge and the SWW-280ED-F as this is both water and oil rated. Problem is the resistance of the sender. It might not be matched to the electric gauge as the SW temp gauge only shows 240 max and the sender goes to 280. Might have to scale the sender using a resistor in series or parallel.

I looked on SW website and could not find the GREEN line gauges anywhere. I would recommend contacting their technical support group and discussing what you are trying to do.

I think the gauge would be maxed out all the time because the trans oil gets so hot - 400 degree range.

I'm with bigolds, a 240 degree gauge will be pretty close to max at all times. I'm assuming you're getting one because you're towing. If so, get a real trans temp gauge that goes well over 300 degrees.
