A 200-4R is a better choice for two reasons: 1) it bolts to the Olds block without an adapter and 2) it has better gear ratios. About all you'll have to do is rig a TV cable which is simple b/c millions of 307/ 200 equipped GM cars had them, and have a driveshaft made since the 400 is a longer trans than the 200.

The 200 in stock form won't take a Starfire engine for long (neither will a stock 700 FTM), but the aftermarket has made them essentially bulletproof.

With the 200R4 conversion, there are a couple of minor problems to deal with. If the car has A/C, the fill tube has to be bent toward the firewall for clearance. A small hammer job is necessary to the upper right side of the tunnel to clear a projected area on the trans. The stock rear crossmember can be reused but it has to be relocated rearward. A trans cooler is advised when used in a heavy car. A somewhat annoying problem will be the shift indicator. If left stock, the gear positions will not line up with original markings due to four versus three. Other wise, you will have to make a new indicator dial. Running wise, when finished, this makes a very satisfying trans setup.

thanks for the info this gives me something to think about. I don't know if I want to go to the trouble or not. I am putting it into the paint shop in two weeks. We are going to take the engine out and the front clip off to detail the front frame and engine and I thought that it would be a good time to change the tranny.
