5-speed

Anyone running a 5-speed in their a-body? I'm looking for a 5 speed setup that does not require modifying the transmission hump. Thoughts, advice and experience is appreciated.

One choice that works is the Doug Nash 4+1 / Richmond Gear 5 Speed Road Race.

The Legend Gear and Transmission LGT-700 5 Speed looked like a possibility but seems to be currently in limbo and in my mind has an unknown track record. Maybe other members can comment on the LGT-700 transmission as I have no firsthand experience.

I did an auto to manual swap with the new obsolete Keisler RS-600, no floor mods other than cutting a hole for the shifter of course. I hear the LGT-700 is a nice trans as well, but as mentioned they may be hard to find. Moral of the story here, you may have no choice but to cut the floor a little. Personally, I wish I would have cut the floor and raised the tunnel a little bit, it fits as is, but would fit better if the tunnel was raised.

The most common 5-speed swap into muscle cars is the Tremec TKO-500 or TKO-600, but generally require some floor cutting. I've seen pre-made sheet metal to install on the tunnel, if you're so inclined to do so.

I have a Richmond 5 speed (Doug nash 4 + 1) in my 65 442. It did not require any mods to the floor.

For that kind of money, I think I’d rather cut the floor, which is what I did on my 77. It’s already not original so doesn’t matter in my opinion.

I have a LGT 700 in a 70 442 convert and no mods to the tunnel but it is tight I did change over to adjustable upper controls arms to get the pinion angle correct. I was very lucky there was a brand new unit on Ebay a few years ago and got it for what he paid and no wait. I didn't want to modify the tunnel either because I do have a console and wanted it to look factory stock, I even used the original factory handle

No matter what you will need to cut the floor and get a different firewall seal plate (or cute the one you have). I have a TKO600 and cut my own tunnel. The TKO / Magnum T56 are both square at the top so you end up with a rectangular shaped hump.
