4 speed console shift handle

I am converting my 69 442 to a manual transmission and wish to install a console. Is the shifter handle/arm different on a console car with a dogleg bend versus simply flat?

The shifter handle is the same on 67 to 69 442's, no difference between console and non console. It is flat with no bends and has the 442 written on it. The cutlass version simply has an "H" on it. The shifter ball is all black on the console version and has the 4 speed pattern on non console applications. It is the 70 to 72 cutlass and 442 that uses the different handles with bends (pn 7169 on console shifter arms and 7305 on non console).

thanks tom

Thanks a lot for the information. I was getting confused when searching craigslist for parts that I need.

I added a parts wanted post. Maybe someone has some of this.

The 1969 442 4 speed has some parts that are unique to 69 only. The reverse lock out and the 1/2 and 3/4 shifter rods/ levers are one year only. If you want it to be factory correct these can be difficult to find. If you are not as concerned with part numbers and more with functionality you have several options. The reverse lock out assembly is reproduced for 70 to 72 and will work for a 69. If you want just the reverse lights to work you can go with the 68 set up which is also reproduced but will only give you the reverse lights and not the lock out feature. The correct shifter body and handle are not that difficult to locate. You may need to have the shifter body rebuilt prior to use if it is slopey and that can be pricey. Have you located any of the parts yet?

Here is a picture.

Be aware that these handles only fit factory Hurst mechanisms.

The bayonet type.

The bolt on type is aftermarket.

Keep in mind that the bench seat version is different than the others, as it has to have more bend in the shifter stick to allow for clearence of the seat.

No, not with the '67-'69 Hurst shifters being discussed.

You are right, assy manual shows two part #'s, one for 4400 (442), and the other for all others. Dan.

I purchased a 69 442 shifter at V-8buick.com from BOP4speed (Scott) and will recieve it next week. He was real pleasent to deal and said it was in good shape. My 69 442 is an automatic and I am keeping the numbers matching transmission. So, I am not concerned with part numbers.

The bigger problem is that I pretty much got screwed on an M20. The gear teeth that transmit the power looked great. Brass synchro's looked good too. I, in my ignorance, did not really look that hard at the synchro teeth on the gears themselves. They are about half worn off with two actually missing. So, I think I basically threw $400 down the drain. Maybe I can contact some of the local tranny shops and muster up a good gearset and get the full rebuild kit.

I am also considering buying the Autogear M22W gearset, iron mid plate, and the full rebuild kit and installing it in the housing. I am basically scared to look at anything used again.

Maybe I should cut my losses and sell the shifter, pedals, z-bar,driveshaft, etc. and bag the whole thing.

Sorry, for the downer attitude, but I just figured out tonight that I got screwed.
