I checked them out Winter 2010-11. https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...hts-2004r.html

I had a conversation with the owner, Caught him in a few bold faced lies. Read post #10 in that thread above.
I had the privilege of having one of the newest elite performance transmission builders as a frequent visiting member of Nastyz28
(Jake Shoemaker).

From his 2004R rebuild tech page......
Above the 400 HP/TQ level we believe that an aftermarket forward drum with 4340 shaft installed is required for reliability,
particularly in heavier cars. Please take note here, when you are shopping for a 200-4R, see if the vendor installs a
"billet" forward drum or if they install an inferior "hardened drum" or just a stock drum. We will show the issue with a
stock or hardened drum for the stouter street cars later in the article. We often see competitors rate their 200-4R's
for 500 HP or even more and nothing listed about the forward drum. This is a $400+ component that a builder isn't going
to dismiss on their build sheet.
Between him and Chris Kokkonis from CK Performance out of New York City..... (a leader/pioneer for the TurboBuick community)
I learned what not to buy, and which guys were selling basic mildly updated 2004R's that would never survive their claims
of performance once the tires actually hooked.

For example......Read the Stage I component upgrade list from CK.
http://www.ckperformance.com/stg_200R4.html

Jake left the 2004R game and moved up to the 4L80e and has become a pioneer leading the class for this new trans.
I ended up buying a Stage II rebuild kit with the upgraded billet input shaft from CK performance.

Yeah, Dave I forgot to mention.
When I was on TurboBuick's forums asking about cheaper used Super Servo's he offered me one for $70.

He gave me all new seals for it, and that's basically half the wholesale price of new off Ebay mind you.
Really nice guy too, he'll sit and hash out trans talk with ya in his spare time if you buy stuff from him.

I think you got the understanding that torque is actually what kills tranny's.
Pulling from a dead stop, I call it "from a dig" and hooking is what will test ANY transmission's reliability.

You buy one of these Ebay specials and throw drag radials or slicks on it and you're going to quickly find out it's not built for it.

The price alone should tell you what you are getting.

Not really.....that's assuming everyone has the knowledge of what does what in a 2004R and what it should cost.

Nobody is born with that knowledge.

I have a 2004r built by Jake behind my 450 hp 455 Pontiac engine in my wagon. He was very helpful in getting me what I wanted. Excellent unit. Doesn't leak, overheat, and shifts very well, at the right points. Going to get him to build one for my Olds next year. He still does 2004r trannys, he just does a lot more of the 4l80s because he has help with those. He builds the 2004rs himself, and runs them on a dyno, while checking pressures in all gears. if you get him to do a 2004r for you, give him some time (about a month or so, to do it) and he will build you a nice unit. He does TH350s and 400s as well.

He drove up last summer for the dyno and met us for lunch in the NW Burbs of Chicago where I live.
I sent him off with a Chicago deep dish for the road. Cool guys.

Jake's 2nd from right. I'm the potato head mick bastid in the middle and my Canadian buddy to the left.
I have pics of the dyno on his trailer outside too. I bought one of the same APBT's from his breeders litter
down in Dallas.....Gotti Greylines. Jake's a kewl kat

Cool. Seem like real cool guys over the phone. That must be his right hand man Mike on the far right. They installed a Billet forward drum in mine, a Billet anchor pin, a nice valve body, good clutches and seals throughout. Shifts right at 5000 rpms like clockwork at full throttle, shifts nice and smooth at low rpms. Acts a lot like a TH350 with a mild shift kit and an extra gear in it.
