Use your eyes and nose as a guide.

Pull the pan, then decide.

If it’s full of crud, and the fluid smells cooked, plan to rebuild it. If the pan is fairly clean, roll the dice.

At the minimum, put a shift kit in it, along with a new filter.

I build a ton of 2004R’s. The trans build you need is from a good core to start with. Hardened stator and sun shell. Billet servo, superior shift kit is fine for something mild. A deep pan is a must. The stick filter picks up between the filter and valve body which is approximately 3/8”. It’s not enough. You can private message me and I can give you an exact run down. I also cut the 4th piston on a brake lathe .075” to accept a 3rd friction for 4th
