200/4R choices

OK, I'm hearing some people here raving about Extreme Automatics.
I've been looking at Art Carr's trannys. That is California Performance Transmission owned by Art Carr. Anyone here have anything to say pro or con about them?

While my engine is at BTR getting done, i figured I might as well pull the trigger on a tranny as well.

Since you're in Palymra, I'd get the trans from CK Performance in Buffalo. They routinely build 200-4Rs for 9-sec and 10-sec turbo Buicks.

DOH! You are correct. Sorry about that. I don't know what I was thinking.

Obviously buying as local as possible is always the most desirable thing to do in case of warranty issues arising.

With that bein said, I've heard great things about CK Performance for well over a decade.
Bought my first Stage II 700R4 from him in 2003.

If you are interested in Extreme Automatics, I'd join TurboBuick forums and ask the guys who use these 2004R's religiously.
They will give you the absolute best options. I built mine myself with CK Performance parts.
To date, I haven't seen any other company do or offer what Chris has done.

How much power is your BTR engine going to make? I ask because I have blown up an Extreme Automatic 2004R TWICE behind my 470 cid small block. Today a T400 is going in the car & I am getting rid of the 2004R as it is nothing but a money pit.

My 470 put 555 hp & 552 TQ to the ground on the chassis dyno & the trans will NOT live with that power level. If you are looking at 400 hp to the ground or 500 at the fly wheel you will be fine. Any more & KA-BOOM she will go....I learned the hard & expensive way.

As far as the Art Carr goes another fellow enthusiast here in Alberta had an Art Car behind his built 455 & it was in & out of his car FOUR times before he quit & went back to a T400.

Hope you have better luck than I did. I have heard of lots of guys running them with great success but after $5K & two rebuilds I am cutting my losses & moving on.

Hey, thanks for scaring the crap out of me.
Engine is going to make 500 - 550hp.
The tranny I ordered is the one rated for 750HP, so hopefully I won't suffer with your bad luck. At least I hope I don't.

Ask for the torque specs. That is what kills a transmission. Olds engines develop a lot of torque

Don't forget the secondary trans cooler. 200R4's seem to hold to up better with good cooling.

1980 5.7D block bored & stroked to 470 cid
425 steel crank
Edelbrock heads flowed 285 @ 650 lift
custom pistons & chevy Eagle rods with ARP fasteners
Victor intake with 850 AED carb
Mondello JM 5-6 cam ground on 106 (hydraulic - no rollers)
Harland Sharpes
ARH headers
11.2:1 compression
all driving & dyno work on 94 octane pump gas

555 hp & 552 TQ to the ground on the dyno.
11.47 @ 118.1 @ mph @ 3800' best pass on a 255 60 15 MT ET Drag radial

The ET is severly hampered by wheel spin & the terrible 1.65 60' times. Need to put a real tire on the car & do suspension work to let the engine live up to its potential. The mph tells the story.

With all due respect Pat, Olds engines make most of their torque at a lower rpm than most other V-8's of this era. If they made a lot of torque everywhere then they'd ultimately make more hp as well. Thanks.

And imo you can't go wrong with an Art Carr piece. But a few key points. You have to use a billet front drum, 13 vane front pump, .500 boost valve, kevlar band and the 6 pack of clutches and bands, standard is 4. From there I've seen many live behind 9 sec. rides no problem.

Best of luck.
