1972 CS Acceleration Problem..

I am having trouble accelerating seemingly past 2nd gear, the car rpms & sound just increase but the speed does not. I am approx going about 15-20 mph when the car's speed will not increase, Any help would be appreciated as usual. Yes I have enough Trans fluid. No other noticeable problems like sputtering while driving or misfiring just the increase in speed.

What color is the trans fluid?
Does it smell burnt?
Will it not shift into 3rd?

If its not shifting into 2nd, it could likely have seized governor weights.
What trans/engine do you have.

Are you sure that's second gear it won't get out of and not first?

not entirely sure if it is even the 2nd gear. Trans fluid red, less than 6 month ago flushed all fluids and replaced, it is rarely ever driven. This issue was not present up until recently. Burning smell is present.

Rarely driven cars are the most susceptible to sticking governor issues, in my experience.

A burned smell to the fluid, when it was flushed just 6 months ago, is not a good sign.

Count your upshifts to see if it's shifting out of first into second. My guess is it's not.

How's your vacuum modulator and lines?

I have never been a fan of
flushing the transmissions and converters.
Filter changes only. I have heard to many
horror stories after 6 months or less on a flush.
All of them involving a rebuild.

Fyi

Never flush a trans. Far too many times I too have heard about them grenade shortly there after. Fluid & filter only. I hope it is something minor but be prepared for a removal & rebuild.

Exclamation Get it looked at asap

The sooner you get it looked at the better chance of not ruining more parts. Good luck and check references before choosing a shop.

I moved this out of the newbie section.

Is it full while it's running and warmed up, in park? I'm with Eric, check and make sure it's actually shifting. It may be the modulator or the hose to it. It can also be the cable for passing gear is stuck.

Newbie mistake, I DRAINED and replenished all fluids not flush. Yes it is in Park and idling when I check the Trans fluid.

Yes it is shifting to each and every gear. After replenishing the Trans fluid I ensured I shifted to every gear to move the fluid around.

Make sure the engine and trans are at operating
temp and on a level surface when checking.
