1969 442 w/ 455 700r4 HELP!!!

Ok, I've read a bit on here and I know there is a lot of info on here. I'm having a problem sorting through all this, I know NOTHING about a trans.

I have a 1969 442 w/ a 700r4 trans and 4000 stalconv. It has NO get up/torque. This is way, way, way too much converter. I don't plan on changing the cam, its not built aggressively. For short term I'm going to get a 1800 stall.

Long term I need a manual trans. Its an original 4 speed, still has clutch petal in car. I would like a new modern prostreet trans, 5 or 6 speed, one w/ least amount of modifications needed and I need to keep $$$$ in mind to an extent.

Quick car specs;
1970 455 w/ E heads, 700r4 w/ 4000stall, 9" Ford 3.73 built by Moser, Entire Global West Coil Over suspension kit, Brembo 6 piston caliper w/ 15"rotors, Flaming River Column tilt, 19" rims w/ Potenza. Its almost done. just need to button up this trans issue.
