i have a 68 442 with hurst shifter. Should it have the Hurst handle on it or just a black ball?

Depends on whether it's a console car or not. Console equipped cars had a ball without a pattern, non console cars had a ball with a pattern.

The Hurst T-handle was a popular aftermarket upgrade. It was never a factory item.

On a four speed, I agree with you, but I put one on the Dual Gate in my 69 H/O and I like it a lot better than the ****.
