1956 Oldsmobile Automatic Transmission Question
1957 Oldsmobile Automatic Transmission Question
Hi everyone!
I need your help about automatic transmission of my Oldsmobile 1957 98 model. Do you know if I can change the automatic transmission ('cause it's damaged) from another model car or a different one? Please I need an advise about this trouble. Or, someone expert about transmission Oldsmobile's cars??
Thanks a lot for your help and answers.

The Hollander interchange shows the complete transmission will fit only '56 Olds with jetaway trans.
However, this type of transmission was used in 56 thru 60 Olds, as well as various models of 56 thru 64 Pontiacs and Cadillacs.
You might use parts from those cars to repair your transmission if they are the same.

Is it a slant pan or a jet-a- way? Some early 56's, mostly post cars, came with a slant pan. If reverse on the dash indicator is all the way to the right and there is no Park all the way to the left it's a slant pan and your options are larger. 54, 55, and early 56 is a direct bolt up. Charlie you have the Hollander and that should be correct, but slant pans have been used a lot to replace jet-a- way transmission I think by only machining the pilot bushing to match the slant pan. And of course plugging off the radiator coolant lines. If I'm wrong on this please correct me, it's been a while.... Tedd

A 54 thru 56 slant pan could be used, if the crankshaft is bored for a pilot bushing, as you mentioned.
The shift quadrant and some linkage would also have to come from the donor car.
98's were all equipped with Jetaway trans.

According to the Hollander there are several other transmissions that will work.
In this list of complete transmissions the one for 1957 Olds is listed as a #572 which fits 57 & 58 Olds
I looked up #572 and found the following notes. # 51, #52, and #54 will fit by using their drive shaft slip yokes, These would be 59 and 60 Oldsmobiles.
They also note that number 522 fits by changing the torque converter and housing and switching the output shaft and housing. That one is for 1957 Cadillac.
As mentioned before, this type of transmission was used by Olds from 56 thru 60. as well as some 56 thru 64 Pontiacs and most 56 thru 64 Cadillacs.
Maybe even some Rolls Royce vehicles too. Many, but not all of the internal parts of those transmissions might interchange.
Good luck.
