Rear Horizontal Shocks on First Generation Toronado's

Q: Does anyone know where to get replacement horizontal rear shocks for a first generation Toronado’s? or do they just not make these anymore?

I have had absolutely no luck with the locals…

Fusick Automotive carries them, kind of pricey but they are the only source that I know of.

Simply, just a positioning arrangement for allowing more space for passengers and cargo. Horizontally-mounted shock absorbers were used in other brands, also. The shock absorber functions just like any other shock absorber. But, might be calibrated stiffer to compensate for the reduced leverage caused by the near horizontal mounting

I really didn't think of Fusick or USA Part Supply. I know both of them have out of this world pricing...

I just looked and Fusick want's $70.00 per horizontal shock.

Well I have already replaced all the other shocks, I was just figured I should go ahead and replace these also. I just really hate to pay that much for a dinky shocks that is hardly used...

Don't be cheap
it has a purpose
from the looks of the mounting I would say that it is most effective at controlling spring oscillations from the braking process. Engineering guesswork.

Quick search led to this interesting bit of automobile education from *1915*

http://books.google.com/books?id=xNc...cks%3F&f=false

ck out page 806, how to unstuck your mired carriage!

Nothing to be found about horizontal shocks though...

AHA!

http://www.circletrack.com/chassiste...pring_science/

"Any type of leaf spring used in racing should have some sort of a damper shock-mounted horizontally or both horizontally and vertically (on a torque arm) to the rearend housing to help control wheelhop under acceleration or braking."

I think we can rule out acceleration forces affecting the REAR axle of the Toronado, which leaves... braking effects.

You have a excellent good point. I can definitely see where they would have an impact braking. I think I’ll go ahead and order a set from Fusick. It doesn't look like I am going to find them anywhere else…

Thanks for sharing the links. Looks like some very good reading to finish off the evening with…

Wherein, it is written:

"The rear solution, while nothing more than two wheel hubs and no drive line, shows those innovative rear mounted shocks that reduced spring wrap up on deceleration."

AWESOME photo / illustration of the FWD drivetrain and frame w/o the body in the way too.

Yeah, when I'm coming into a tight s curve I definitely have need for these shocks at speed. Then I come out of the turn with the car nearly on its side those shocks are working like crazy! I can feel it while posting fastest lap times at Road America! Yeehaw!!! Oh and that's an L-88 from the MCACN.

I had my latest acquisition shipped from the left coast. It came during a snow storm. To say I was unhappy is an understatement. The seller told me it was coming enclosed and then said it was coming open. I agreed. It taught me a valuable lesson. Pay for your own shipping. Don't have it included in the purchase price! He is now paying for the detailing that it needs. I see it tomorrow hopefully all cleaned up! OY!

Maybe it pays to be smart!!!!!!

Rather than pay $ 70.00 each for some reproduction (good luck.....)
maybe treat yourself to 1 set of 7 Olds TORONADO shox including
2 original ** N.O.S. ** DELCO P1127 PLEASURIZERS for the REAR
HORIZONTAL SHOX...................

1 LUCKY WINNER..... Who thinks they're # 1 ??????
