guys, i need help!

i am pulling the engine out but it wont come out.

the flywheel comes apart, engine block from trans separates but it wont let go. the front part of engine lifts off but
something is not letting go.

i need an expert to pin point what im missing,

the flywheel had 3 bolts which i unscrewed already.

Did you remove to bolt under the power steering pump that attaches the engine to the diferential?

 

there were 2 bolts on passenger side, and 2 on drriver right under the power steering pump, those are accounted for.

perhaps the axle thats below the oil pan is the problem, so ill take that off, i hope its not too difficult to do.

I think you had to remove the inspection cover to get to the torque converter to flexplate bolts, but just in case did you remove this piece?

Good idea to cut and move to a new post, sorry Chris.

I did remove the cover and it was not so easy to get that one bolt tucked all the way inside where I had to use alot of extension to reach in from the drivers side.

 

So the front is lifting up but its hanging in the rear? Are you getting it high enough for the rear of the oil pan to clear the crossmember? I've pulled a couple of these just the engine and then engine/transaxle together and remember it's a bear either way. Maybe someone else will have a suggestion of what you can look for.

nj did you get it resolved? If so would you post what the hangup was? That may help someone in the future having the same problem.

I had this problem once, it was the flywheel stuck to the converter. broke the bellhousing getting it apart, oops but it did come out

 

i havent been back at it yet, the car is at my in laws and ive been busy at work.

will definitely update blog once i figure things out.

It sounds like you have everything unbolted. It usually takes some hard lifting and shaking to get the dowels that align the engine and trans to seperate. It is tight between the oil pan and the right drive axel, but you don't have to remove the axel to get the engine out or in.

 

Is the engine moving forward enough to clear the alignment dowels on the transmission case? Also do you have all three engine mounts removed, one on each side of the engine and one in the front attached to timing cover?

 

I was able to get the engine out...

Tip for a rookie like me that may attempt this:

- after you've done everything, made sure all bolts/nuts/covers, etc.. are off..

- during the pulling the engine out with hoise, use a jack to the lift the trans first!

The issue with me was the transaxle was holding the engine down so once that cleared, it came right out.

The Terrifying Toronado suffered from the same ill handling as Hairy. If you've seen the steering linkage on an early Toro you know it's pretty stout. Under full throttle, both Hairy and the TT would toe the front wheels in so hard it would bend the Toronado tie rods. There was all kinds of reinforcing done to the steering linkage to get the cars to where they were even remotely easy to control.
