How to change the heater core

Got a leaking core in my 1981 Toro. The shop manual does not have a step by step instruction. Mechanic thinks the dash has to come out. Any other way to do this? Thanks

He is right. I did a heater core on a 84 Eldorado. Its the same car, different name. I had to take the whole dash out and the heater box is right behind it.

Any tips or tricks to doing it damage free? I'd hate to screw up the dash pad as its perfect still.

If you have an 81 chassis manual, there is a step by step to remove the Instrument Panel Pad Assembly - Toronado Section 8B3... Use Fig. 8B3-29 on page 8B3-10
After IP is removed go to section 1B4... Use Fig. 1B4-13 to R&R heater core...

The step-by-step instructions are in Fig 1B4-13 on page 1B4-9 of the 1981 CSM. These are not the most comprehensive CSM instructions I have ever seen, but unfortunately Step 4 says to remove the instrument panel.
