66' Toro wiring harness

Good day all,

Does anyone have any insight on how the heavy gauge wiring for the charging and voltage regulator is routed and connected in the 66' Toronado? I've had a good look at mine, on the underhood side at least, and have attached a crude drawing of how it's laid out as far as I can see. It all seems to go into the cabin and who knows where it goes from there. I'm curious how the wiring gets from the alternator back to the horn relay/junction block.

Thanks!

I don't know if you saw it, but 68RocketAction has a Sticky near the top of the forum page with a 1966 Toronado Assembly Manual. I believe if you download it, wiring is in Section 12. Or I believe someone posted a color wiring schematic if you check the archives. Hope this helps.

There is a splice somewhere in the harness where it splits and supplies power to a number of different things. I've never torn into the harness to find the splice though.

Thanks, you are correct about the splices. And Thanks for the schematic.

You may want to keep it original, but be aware that these cars can benefit from a swap over to an internally regulated alternator with higher output than they had in 1966. I think factory was 65 amps or so, later ones put out 95 amps and higher. This is good if you’re planning on adding a later stereo, or other electronic doo-dads.

There are good instructions here somewhere about doing the swap to a later 10si or 12si unit. Either one or both should swap in place of the existing alternator. The voltage regulator was good for its time, but solid state works better - better charging at low rpm, less to mess with, fewer wires to break.

Just FYI.
