What is it ?
Recently acquired a 62 Starfire 394 with slim jim transmission. What is the little metal can shaped container with what appears to be a metal tubing on the top of it. It's mounted above the tranny dip stick on the passenger side at the rear of the engine. Need to know name/purpose/ and if it requires vacuum, where is it routed from. Thanks

It's the transmission's vent tube. Do not connect vacuum to it unless you want to suck all the fluid out of your Slim Jim. The canister is there so in case the transmission does vent some fluid (due to overfilling, overheating etc) it will collect in the canister and run back into the transmission after the condition corrects. It doesn't hold much, but it might save some fluid loss. Roto HydraMatics are notoriously sensitive to fluid level.
Viking. I've been waiting for some better evenings and free time from Grandchildren and Honey Dos. Like Joe P. I have more than one Olds and try to get them out as much as I can to Cruise nights. Oldsguy is right! The 455 is an awesome sledgehammer. Got a fresh one in my 70 Cutlass Supreme. Recently went to a great show in Montville with it. Took my 37 4DR. Touring Sedan with the freshened Rocket 350 that came out of my Cutlass to The Chatterbox up in Sussex County. My 32 4 Dr. Dual Side Mounted Beauty doesn't get out much but gets started regularly. Missed the AACA Annual Spring Show at Hanover Switch in Florham Park THis May. The 62 Starfire is my newest work in progress and I'm eager to get it out and around. Weekends are tough for me but really liked going to Whiskey Cafe in East Rutherford. Rutt's Hut in Clifton seems to be up and kicking once again on Tuesday's I think. Like you guys, I'm an Oldsmobile Nut. See my cars at www.oldsmobilesforever.com
