im doing a front disk conversion from master power brakes and was thinking of cutting the coil spring. im just wondering befor i do this has anybody else done this? if so how many coils is too much and how many did you take off?

 

I've cut around 3/4 coil to one full coil off the front of A-body springs and I like the look of the rake. You can't simply cut the back springs since the end coils are reduced diameter. Cutting springs is easy. I've used two different methods, either a cutoff wheel or a torch. When using a torch, I submerge the spring in a bucket of water so the water level is just below the cut line. This precludes damaging the heat treat on the spring metal.

When I first got my 66 I slapped some tires and wheels on it. It looked like a 4 x 4. I chopped the springs front and rear twice. I didn't want to go too far so I cut about 3/4 of a coil in front and 1/2 a coil in back. I drove it for a week to settle and it was better but still not the look I was after. I ended up taking about another 1/3 coil in the front and 1/4 coil in back to make it perfect. Here is stock height and after 2 coil cuts.
I drove it like that for 6 months and then pulled the body off the frame for a complete build. As mentioned above if you have pigtail top and bottom springs you can't cut the rears.
