Looking for an aftermarket steering column for my 66 delta 88. Anyone point me in the right direction? I bought the car 5 years ago, sold it last year and bought it back last month. My 16 year old brother was shot and killed last month and he absolutely loved the car so I immediately hunted it down and bought it. The steering column has been hacked to **** so it cannot be repaired.
Unfortunately, there's very little aftermarket support for 88s and 98s. That being said, you may be able to get a universal steering shaft or one intended for an Impala. Here's a company that does steering shafts for classic cars/hot rods.
There's a 1965 tilt unit showing on E-Bay which I am sure will work. I won't post a link as I only seem able to get Canadian E-Bay, but this Google search should work: "1965 Oldsmobile 88 98 Tilt Steering Column Column Shift."
In your search, you should look for both 1965 and 1966 columns since both will physically fit and bolt right in. The models that will bolt up include 88/98/Starfire and probably the Jetstar 88. The Toronado columns can donate some parts but are longer than your 88 “B-body”. In 67, Olds went to a padded dash and I think they also may have changed the electrical connectors.
The baseline 88/98 models had a non-tilt, non-adjustable length. In ‘65 they built a tilt colum. For 1966 the top end was the tilt & telescoping column. Dig around classic junkyard for basic models which can be painted to match. The “tilt & tele” are a bit more elusive since they’re desirable options for these old cars.
It’s worth a shot to call Turner’s Auto Wrecking in CA, French Lake Auto Parts in MN and maybe GM Sport Salvage in Stockton, CA.
Thank everyone for the condolences. Was tragic. He was staying the night with a friend and other friends showed up with a stolen gun. Kid was waving it around and shot my brother pretty much point blank in the chest.
