Steering box

I have a 1971 Cutlass that I want to upgrade the Steering box to try and improve the handling. I am running a Type 2 pump with 1250 psi and remote reservoir. Any help would be great.

I run the 93-97 Jeep Grand Cherokee steering box with a factory pump on my 70 Cutlass. It’s a a Saginaw box so it looks almost identical to the factory box. It uses a different coupler and you need adapters for the SAE hoses or you can run metric hoses with no adapters. Unlike the popular F-body box the JGC box has the same turning radius as our cars. It is fast ratio 12.7-1 and it has a much larger torsion bar which will give the car a much more modern feel.

A lot of the people have bought their box from this guy for their Buicks. Here is a link to his ad on V8Buick.com.

I swapped in a gearbox from a 86 442 probably 30 years ago. It does make a huge improvement in the way the car drives. I describe it as having “power steering” instead of “powerful steering”. It gets rid of the overly assisted, one finger steering.

Matt, I put a rebuilt box for a 85-87 Cutlass, is there a different box for a 442? Thanks Roger

I had my original 16:1 variable ratio Saginaw gear box rebuilt by a local company that replaced the internal parts to quicken the ratio to 12.7:1. I've done this with several '70-'72 A-body cars and really like the improvement. Some guys do a swap to a 12:1 or even 10:1 ratio box and have commented that the car gets a bit "twitchy" with such a fast ratio. Maybe that is needed for a road racing car but for a weekend cruiser (like most of our cars) I think the 12.7:1 ratio is fast enough.

the performance G body cars (Monte SS, Grand National, 442, etc) got a gearbox with faster ratio.
