need new springs for my 68

I am looking to replace all 4 coil springs on my 68 442 convertible. I think the old ones are sagging, but I want to increase height by 2 inches. Any suggestions on which springs to use? I used to have a Moog catalog that gave spring height, weight, and length for each spring, but must have thrown it out. It has the 400 motor, automatic, a/c.

Well, I installed a set of stock replacement hd springs in the rear, Moog #5409. It did the job I was looking for. Raied the rear about 2 inches. I guess the old springs were just weak. Now the fronts, although now that the rear is level, I might leave the fronts alone.

Well, went ahead and replaced the fronts. Used Moog 5450 stock replacement for a/c car. That made the difference again. Now it is sitting the way I wanted it to sit. Nice and level. Now for paint work. Let the stripping begin!

Don't mind the Ford sign. For some reason my work seems to like having theie logo on the walls.

Good deal! We look forward to seeing pictures after the paint job.

BTW, why did you park your car next to that Ford emblem on the building in the picture?

Going to stay with original color Safron Yellow.

I am a sales manager at a Ford dealership, and I use the bays to work on the car after hours on the weekends. I didn't even realize I was parked under the sign until I saw the pictures. I get razzed all the time. My last three projects were a 68 396 SS Chevelle, 70 Corvette, and now the 442. Let's face it, these were much more fun cars in the 60's and 70's than Fords.

Talking Stripped stripe

Your car originally had a Y70 GT pin stripe on it from the factory, so consider putting that back on too...runs from the headlight to the tail light on a convert...

How did you know it had this stipre originally? Where did it run, lower or upper body? I don't think I ever saw one.

Y70

The pin stripe runs parallel to and under the peak moulding a quarter inch away from the moulding...a '68 442 comes with the stripe if you don't order the W36 rallye stripe...( Olds Product Selling Information, page 102, item #4) Look at Muskrat's car... a blue '68 with a white stripe...it is tape but the factory put it on with paint and then is the fact that the numbers on a W36 car are lower and more rearward than the pinstripe car which yours is...which you can see the difference from across the street and I forgot to mention that I have the same mirrors on my '68 as you...1973 Omega, when I first saw them I went straight to the dealers and ordered a set... see pics of rcorrigan5-a '68 442 convert...with a rallye stripe...

I assume the stripe would be black, correct?
Didn't know where the mirrors came from. They were on it when I got them and the driver is remote. Thought I'd keep them. Thanks for all the good info.

Great spring replacement before & after pictures - it helps me to narrow down my choices also.

That Moog link was very helpful - I made a little chart of only the choices for my car and I think i know which way to go.

Ironically, the front regular springs for my Olds (w 350 & A/C) have almost the same spring rate (-6 lbs) as those on the front of my old Pinto sedan! No wonder that little car's ride is so firm!

Cool Stripes

There are four colours available- black, white, red and orange for 442's and Toro's and two extra ones for Toro's...so take your pick I forgot to mention that the stripe is 1/4 inch wide..

My '68 Holiday Coupe has remnants of the stripe, too. I think it was white on the Willow Gold.

I never realized that the emblem placement corresponded with the stripe option.

How far back does the Y70 pinstripe go on a hardtop?

If you have not replaced your upper and lower A arm control bushings and ball joints , I would highly recommend you do. I replaced all of my bushings front and rear yesterday and the improved ride and handling is unbelievable.(My car is a 69 442 )BTW, I had previously replaced sway bar bushings and tie rods etc. Good luck with your build.
