1957 olds lowering ( blocks, coils )

anyone ever lower their 57 olds by cutting a coil up front and blocks in the rear? I had plan to do this on the fiesta, but I noticed there is a coil over shock in the rear. ive also seen this on a 58 fiesta. did all olds have this or was this just a wagon thing because of the weight? would I have any problems throwing a block in there?

Are you talking about the old load leveler coil over shock?

not sure if that's it or not, but this appears to be factory. maybe someone can confirm this.

Those look like the old style load leveler shocks. They were not a factory part. Does your car have a hitch on it or any signs of one in the past for towing?

Not at all. I wonder if this is why the car sits kinda high in the back. Has a bit of a rake .

People would put them in for 3 reasons, 1 is towing, 2 is the rear is sagging, or 3 they haul around an extremely heavy mother in law.

Lol! Well I'm not married nor will I be using it to tow. Think I could remove the coils and reinstall the shocks with no problems ? I do want to lower the rear.

I don't think they were factory. I think they have just been on there a long time. I would put regular shocks on and see how it sits.

It's very nice, the plastic line may have been from an old air shock install. If it's not connected to anything, just remove it.

Hi New2olds. I am doing a '57 super 88, not a wagon, but i just had my rear springs re-arched with an added leaf. This supposedly will lower it 2 inches w/o blocks. Not sure yet and i hope it works. Best of luck. let us know how it goes. Bill. Charly9g.

That line is the rear flex hose that is attached to the diff housing. Please do not remove it, it is a needed part to ensure that your rear brakes work!!!
