Hello, i have a 76 Olds 442 with a 75 350 (Early 76 car) and i recently put on Quick Fuel 600 Cfm Slayer Carb. The car is running very rich with this new carburetor and the fuel levels are right in the middle. There is White Smoke/Steam coming out of the Pipes because it is running so rich? I do not think this carburetor is too big for this car considering i do have some mods other than the Carb (Hedman Long Tubes, Edelbrock Performer Intake, X Pipe to Flowmaster 50s). I Do not own a Vacuum Gauge (Picking Up One Tomorrow) So i pretty much tune to sound for the most part and the Float Levels are in the middle which would mean that they are right around 6-7 fuel pressure? Please Help.

 

Float levels and psi don't have much of a relation because both are adjustable. You need a fuel psi gauge to properly set fuel psi along with a regulator , the white smoke cannot be a rich condition as when fuel burns rich it blows black smoke. White usually means steam which can be because of cool weather or a leaking head gasket. A high fuel psi will make a car run rich and stumble but I have has as much as 9 psi on a carb and the float level was in the middle. When I shut it off it would push fuel past the needle and seat.

 

i don't think i have a Head Gasket Leak.. Considering i am not losing any Coolant and i do not see any leaks around the heads. Couldn't it be something else?

 

White smoke is steam. Are you losing coolant? Check your oil. Even if it doesn't look like chocolate milk it can still be a head gasket leaking.

 

I have ran a 600 , 650 , 750 , and 835 on a smal block olds. The 600 was on a mild near stock build. I will say the idle was a tad rich but not overly bad. I had had a head gasket leak directly into the cylinder. Saw steam but no contamination elsewhere. Just some food for though.

 

If i am leaking coolant its very little, so no i am not leaking coolant. i just changed my oil with Brad Penn Racing Oil 2 weeks ago and i did not see anything unusual.

 

Even if it was leaking inside one of the Cylinders would i see Coolant Loss?

 

Sometimes it can be very minimal . Best bet is to pressure test the cooling system if there is pressure loss then you have a leak somewhere.

 

What do your spark plugs look like? Quick Fuels are pretty lean out of the box. Do you see the white smoke after the car has been run to temperature?

What carb was on the car before the swap, why the swap, any symptoms beforehand?

 

If the setup is available to you , a single cylinder must be pressurized in turn with air ( and then check for bubbles in the radiator). The normal pressure tester won't show a drop in pressure because the leak is so small.

 

I don't know if a 76 is a catalyst car or not. If you are running a cat convertor then you will get white smoke from the exhaust from a rich condition. If it is rich as you say the cat will also be glowing red hot. I have seen this condition catch the carpet on fire inside the car.
