Hey guys, was kicking the idea around to have an external oil filter assembly. Something else I was wondering, would it be a good idea to pass the oil through and external transmission cooler? Use a external transmission cooler, instead use it as a cooler for the engine oil? Just an idea

 

For a relatively stock engine those things are unnecessary. I would make sure the cooling system is operating ok.

 

You want your car to run cool? Put in an aluminum radiator and electric fans. That's what I did and it runs at 180 even on the hottest summer days in traffic. You can see the electric fans in the pic. I know this may be beyond what some folks can afford and may be overkill, but it works really well.

 

Hey z what did you use for your electric fan set up? Im thinking of going with a be cool radiator and electric fan combo.

It's not cheap but its a complete kit.

Was wondering,am building a stroker one day. She will have some power to her. Want good oil protection, that is why I thought of an external oil filter but with a double pass. Since I would do this, have an oil cooler for the engine oil as well. My thoughts would save on engine life.

And Z, yes I am going to that setup. Saves on HP that, what core is the rad? Where did you get it?

 

People have been running a quality oil filter for decades. Why get into unnecessary exotic oiling systems. All your doing is throwing more areas prone to failure into the mix on a street car. If the engine cooling system is working properly, no worries.


There are a great number of threads pertaining to electric fan systems, radiators, etc that range in price from inexpensive to $$$$. You don't have to throw a lot of money at overcooling your engine. I always like to see what it's doing and then make the changes required to keep it running cool.

 

Kyle I went from a two row copper core to a 3 row and being that I just use the car in the summer buddy just painted the tanks, no paint on the core. I was in traffic many times in Toronto on some hot days with no problems. Never thought bout the oil I just change it in the fall with Quaker state. Is Cutlessefi doing your motor ?

 

TO traffic is a great test on a car. And yes he will building me an engine.

 

You sending your engine down to him? 350? Just wondering I'm looking around for a good used one to have built while I continue driving mine. Hard to find a decent one up here.

 

I went with a Be Cool and Spal fans. Yes, pricey but they do the job. I will never run hot again. My wife is glad about this.

 

He has a 350 dx block waiting for me for my build. She won't be a little horse when he is done. I have a line on another dx block,if he still has. Interested?

I'm pretty sure Summit has a kit. There's a base plate that goes between the oil filter and its engine bay. The base plate gives in and out access hoses that run to a mini cooler like a trans cooler.
No experience with it--try the traditional stuff first. My 454 Chev in a street rod runs 160 while moving and goes up to 200 traffic with a lot of stops. I understand this is well within limits with modern lubricants it should take 250 or so before damage.


My 200 is also water temp for short time periods, not oil temp. Its a street rod without A/C. If I add A/C I may be in for the Kit on that car since there's no way to increase air. It has both mechanical and electric fans.

 

I'm not sure a transmission cooler will handle 80lbs pressure too well, engine oil coolers are stoutly constructed for a reason.
Endurance race cars almost universally have engine oil coolers, with built in thermostats - overcooled engine oil isn't good - but unless you are contemplating heavy duty towing probably not necessary for you.
If you are concerned why not fit an oil temperature gauge, if it runs hot after your proposed mods it won't be difficult to retro fit a cooler.

I am hoping the 4 core traditional radiator will keep it all cool enough. If not, I'll add a cooler in for the 200r4

I went from a 2 row brass to a 2 row aluminum with dual electric fans. The aluminum has larger rows. It was not enough. I run 210 on the highway but it cools to 200 in traffic. mild 455, 180 degree thermostat. I'll be working on cooling it this spring.
I had a remote filter system given to me so I might give it a try.

Great engine compartment nice mix of old and new tech, very clean install like it came from the factory that way. How much room is there between the hood and air cleaner?

 

Zip. It's an Air Gap and the stock air cleaner bumps into the under hood pad as you can see from the dirt(?) on the air horns. It fits, but just barely. Thanks for the props!

 

I thought this thread was about cooling the engine oil?.

Cool motor means cooler oil.
