330 Engine identification.

I recently decided to do an engine rebuild on my 330. When I bought the car I was told it was an original 330. How ever now that the engine is out half of it is red like some one painted it gold while still in the car and none of the numbers match what is in the repair manual. Also the pistons that are in it are high compression, I check them against the book and they match. I have posted pics of the castings on the engine posted below front and back any help would be great as I am coming up totally blank! Thank you all for the help!

The number means small block while a letter would be a big block and the numbers381917 is a casting number for a 330

Yes I know that. My question is what year and high compression or low. In the 67 repair manual it says that the high compression 330 was red and the numbers dont match the 67 casting number listed in the book. The engine was red. The engine was painted over with gold. I have researched the numbers and have come up with nothing for that year and dont know where to go from there.

The numbers stamped on the head is U074636. Which also doesn't match anything in the repair manual or any thing that I have found online. hahah no problem! Ive just spent so much time looking into this and finding nothing. Its quite aggravating having a mystery car/engine since nothing I buy seems to work out for me. Its a never ending process thats for sure.

Okay, So I have a 1965 330? With random high compression pistons? hahah Thanks for the information. This would explain why that was not in my 1967 service manual. I guess I was just under the impression that the engine was original. Is it possible that the engine is a 1967 but the heads are a 1965 or did things change over the years?

Spend some time on Wild About Cars and you'll get more answers:

That is not a '67 block.

Throw out that repair manual if it says that. All 330s were originally gold.

#1 would be 1964 330, it has a few peculiarities.
