Can you post the casting number on top of the timing chain housing? Its right behind the top of the water pump.

68-72 350 engine. (The Olds FAQ incorrectly says 68-70)

68-69 heads. You have the best flowing stock heads and a great small block Olds motor there.

A guy up the street from me has the same engine in a 69 Firebird convertible.

Actually, the 39M160462 is called the VIN-derivative. The 3 means it's Oldsmobile, the 9 means it's a 1969 model year motor, and the M means it was built at the Lansing, MI factory. The last six digits correspond to the build sequence number of the car it came in. The head and block casting numbers are consistent with a 1969 motor.

Thanks to evryone helping me to identify this engine. now I will have to see what tranny is hooked to it being which automatic either stock pontiac or the oldsmobile tranny. or did that model only have a powerglide? Does anyone know what that engine would have for horsepower? It is a two barrel engine but of course I can change that... Thanks for all the help again

Olds and Pontiac motors have the same bellhousing bolt pattern and will bolt to the same transmissions.
