power steering pump for a/c vs non a/c
power steering pump for a/c vs non a/c
What is the difference? I see the previous owner replaced the power steering pump pulley with a single but kept the original power steering pump. The pulley looks bent. Maybe it is because a non a/c car has a different pulley than the a/c cars?

this is I know...
On a '69 350, the main pump is the same , only the pulleys are different for AC and non AC. The AC pulley is a double groove pulley and the non AC is a single groove, of course , but the single groove is back towrds the pump , so the pulley has a big 'dish' to it. . Reason I know this, the previous owner of mine started installing AC, never completed it, it has the double pulley on it and I need the single one with the 'dish', in fact I'm thinking of putting it in a lathe to see if I can cut the outer groove off... .PS. also other GM products are different ( it's an Olds only thing ) Other GM pumps are the same, but it's the reservoir that Olds made different, thinner, iI think......hope this helps

Thanks for the info.
So my single pulley for a non-A/C car is mounted on a A/C car power steering pump. If the A/C pump reservoir is thicker or thinner, then that is what is throwing my pulley off.
Maybe we should trade pulley's? Mine is a single dish chrome.

Check to make sure your pump bracket has the correct spacers, there are two, one in front, and the other in front of the motor mount. Here is the setup from the '70 Assembly Manual.

I assume you cas is a non AC, and it has the single ''bent'' pulley, if so, all is fine If you want to install AC in a non AC car, you need the pulley I got. The Olds resevoirs, I thnik , are narrower than the GM ones, that plus maybe plus the brackets is what makes them different .. ALL pumps are the same ! Shaft lenghs are the same ! But, obviously, the pulleys are different. Yes, if you want the double AC pulley, we can trade, as I need the single ''bent pulley '', and I'll probabley cut it up anyway .....If your alignment is off, it could be the brackets, or spacers, minw has no spacers..........

Thanks guys. I found my problem. I was missing on spacer and the brace that bolts the power steering pump to the side of the head.
Now where do I find that part? I am sure that will not be easy or cheap. Does anyone run with out that brace and not have a 'wobble' on the pump pulley?

while installing my PS pump yesterday... I discovered an alignment problem on mine also , it had no spacers anywhere, , with the use of a level for a straight edge, some washers in a couple places, a little bend here..... maybe you make can a brace,
FYI...The spacer dimensions are as follows;
Top on water pump stud .200 (washer)
Middle between timing tab stud and P/S bracket .825
Bottom above pan rail .390
2 & 3 could be fabbed out of steel tubing, or stack washers to req. thickness.
