Best 1972 Cutlass Exhaust Set Up

Right now its got hookers headers, with cats going to magnaflow muffler then 2 inch pipe at the back.

Plan is to take out the cats and put a straight pipe, h pipe, or x pipe any idea's thanks

i dont understand why you got cats on a 72 but i would recommend x pipe and 2 1/2" pipe all the way through.the crossflow is suppose to be better for the motor and increase power.i have a magnaflow x pipe and im happy with it.

person i bought it off put them on said there easy to pass aircare with and yes im going to get a x pipe but my tailpipes are 2 inch

never heard of aircare.i live in california and are smog laws are probably different from where you live,but i thought we have the most strict smog laws in the country.if your allowed to,toss the cats.tailpipes r a lil small but what size is the rest of the pipe.olds motors like to breathe.

There is just no reason to put cats on a pre 1975 vehicle. They didn't come with them and thus are not required. The body is not set up for them either and don't have the proper heat shielding. You're going to end up with holes in the floors due to the heat coming off the cats.

For a comparison,Heres my car with 3 inch pipes from front to back,X pipe,Custom bent tail pipes out to the rear bumper and 40 series flowmasters.........Dump those cats,I bought some parts used but have almost $700 with labor in this system............. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfC0icZ-FQs

look at the vt dynoflow mufflers have a trap door that has a spring on them under normal load it is low and quite and on the gas it flops open and is aggressive some of the gto guys on performance years .com in there form have been running them and relay like them. something to check out .Pontiac
had a VOE option for a short time in 1970 that did the save thing only with vacuum to open the gate they used it on the humbler commercial you ca see it on you tube . That is also able to be bought now days waldon exhaust has been repop them for a few years ram air restorations sells a x pipe set up is a copy from Darrel Waltrip from back in his nascar days. Let the fun begin

ok i guess you haven't read the previous comments but I HAVE NOT PUT THE CATS IN IT IS FROM THE PREVIOUS OWNER AND ALSO THERE IS A REASON TO PUT THEM IN BECAUSE OF AIR CAR BUT SCREW THEM IM TAKING THEM OFF LIKE I SAID BEFORE THANKS FOR THE HEADS UP

ok i did thank you but im tired of hearing why did i put them on and that means to get insurance i have to pass aircare where they test my exhaust if i don't pass then i don't get plates

Well the emission standards for a car that old don't require the use of them in the first place. If the engine is that out if tune that it won't pass without them then installing them wouldn't help.

Where do you live?

engine is rebuilt and good shape and i didn't put them on the guy that owned it did he said it will help pass air care and i don't care about them im taking them off anyways i live in b.c lower mainland other areas don't require this BS

Try Torq Tech, I had their 2.5 X-pipe set up on a 72 Cutlass and it sounded great plus enhanced the torque. You'll need a good shop to get it welded in, I ran Flowmaster 50 series and they gave a deep tone. I also had a healthy cam and Hooker Comp headers.

I have a 71 Cutlass with a 350. I have some type of header, going straight to glasspacks coming out the sides. A hillbilly special and loud as f*ck. I hated it at first (It was like this when I bought it) but now I'm used to it.
