oil pan gasket replacement

i have a 1970 cutlass supreme 350 4bl, with 54,000 original miles, the oil pan is leaking, what is the easiet way to replace the gasket, also should i drop the trans and re-do the rear main seal also, if i have to pull the motor, i will probably get it rebuilt then, any advise?'
thanks

I would suggest pulling the engine to replace the oil pan gasket and rear main seal. It could be done in the car though just not the right way to do it. When it all said and done, its easier that way.

Now, just because you pull the engine doesn't mean you have to rebuild the entire engine. If your engine has good compression and runs good I would leave it alone. Think of it as an opportunity to ge-gasket the motor, clean and repaint it, maybe put a timing chain in it if it hasn't been replaced recently. Its possible your engine has a lot of life left in it.

Don't let the "might as well" disease get to you. Plan the repair and stick to it.

thanks don, the car does run great, its has 54,000 original miles, i got it from the original owner who was 91yrs old, it has been leaking more oil since it has been sitting in a shop getting metal work done for paint, i guess i will pull the motor, and do a refresh on it, and do the trans as well.
