Can anyone confirm casting numbers for a '72 350 used in a Cutlass Supreme? I have a 380001LH code casted "1", and a 398704YRH code casted "4" that I wanted to use on my restoration.
For a 1972, The Good Olds Days book says the 398704 is correct for the passenger side.
It says the correct number for the driver side as 411961.
(It lists the 380001 as from 1970 into 1971, then 411961 from 1971 into 1972.)
I have a set of original. I will look at them tomorrow and see if I have the 411961 I will be happy to help you out if you are interested. I'll get back....

I don't know what book that is, but the factory parts book shows that 1971-72 350 motors use P/N 403453 on the driver's side. The 1972 Engine Assembly Manual confirms this. P/N 403453 is casting number 380001 without the heat riser valve.
Passenger side is P/N (and casting number) 398704.
Casting 411961 was first used in the 1973 model year.

Thank you. If Mr. Padavano is correct, I may have lost sleep for no reason.

Appreciate you taking the time to research my question, and contributing to my deeper sleep last night. My parts book is different than what you were looking at, and I couldn't find any reference to what you did. Again, thank you.

Again, this is the problem with using a Parts Book that was printed some time after the production date of the car. The Parts Book only lists those parts that were available at the time that book was printed. It is NOT the listing of part numbers the car was built with. Olds regularly superseded part numbers when older parts were discontinued or sold out. My data comes from the January 1972 printing of the Parts book. More to the point, the 1972 Engine Assembly Manual DOES list the parts that were used on the assembly line.
Also keep in mind that part numbers may or may NOT match the casting number, depending on what operations were done to the casting after it was cast. I've assembled a database that traces casting numbers to part numbers.

This is the page from the Jan 1972 Parts book

Been at this resto for over 5 years now, and I learn the important stuff a bit too late. Taking my 1983 parts book as "gospel" has probably led to more wild goose chases than I care to remember. But what you reveal makes sense, and I think these manifolds would be acceptable to use. Trying to be mindful of numbers, the last thing I wanted was the wrong casting number on the one side that doesn't have the heat riser shield.

Unfortunately that April 1983 Parts Book is of very limited value for 1972-earlier cars. For example, it shows Ka heads for the performance big block applications (replacing D, F, and H heads). Worse, it shows J heads for the non-performance applications (replacing A, B, C, E, and G heads). That should tell you something right there.
