Hello everyone,

I am currently rebuilding a 1964 330ci, and after taking off the heads, I found a metal piece in the passenger side head coolant chamber at the rear of the head.

Below is a picture of the metal piece in the head. It appears attached, as if it is from the factory. It is also somewhat spring, it moves up and down, but returns to the position seen in the picture. I am assuming this is some sort of device used to moderate the flow of coolant, and the springiness comes from a thermal spring, which will adjust the position of the piece as the coolant heats up.

If anyone has any idea what this device is or why it is in my head, I would be very grateful. Also, is this something I can / should try to remove?

I cant tell from your picture but it might be a piece of wire used to hold the casting core together. I see it a lot in Ford heads but it usually looks more like coat hanger wire.

 

It appears that it is indeed left over from the casting process. I broke it off and removed it with some pliers, then cleaned it up a little.

There is always something to learn when working on these cars.

I've never seen anything like that, but I have seen the coat hanger wire.
