Looks like the oil slinger that goes on the crank snout behind the timing cover oil seal.

If it is all the way back together, I would put it on a shelf and save it. If you can still put it in without all the complete tear down I would put it in. If you leave it out and have a big front seal leak then you'll have to re do it and put it back in. If not just go for it. It is sposta sling the oil away from the seal.

Reminds me of the time we worked on my friends 56 Ford, we were teenagers. We were quite proud, we replaced the rear main seal! Get it all back together and go sit on his back porch for a break and see the oil pump sitting there....

The whole point of the oil slinger is to minimize the amount of oil trying to get past the front seal. Without it, expect to see a leak from the front seal. You really want to put it back in.

Definitely put it back in.

When I assembled my 455 on the engine stand I forgot to install the fuel pump eccentric. I considered being lazy and running an electric fuel pump, but I removed the timing chain cover and installed it. Because that's what right looks like.

If you used all stock fasteners, the important bit is the fuel pump eccentric is what actually retains the dowel pin in the cam. While rare, it's possible for the pin to walk out, then the gear can shimmy around on the cam.

I got in a hurry last week and left my slinger off as well. Had to take the cover off, order a new gasket, and reinstall. It serves a purpose...don't leave it out.

I just pulled apart my 260, found a use for one, parts. I was going to steal the oil slinger, to my surprise there was a fairly new looking timing set, keeping that on shelf, no oil slinger. This motor leaked nothing, even had the upgraded metal reinforced pan gaskets. Not saying it is right but it being left out doesn't means it will be a oil leaker either.
