Won't start?

Hi everyone, I am having a problem trying to get my '70 Olds "Rallye" starting.
The carb is rebuilt, new fuel pump, the carb is getting fuel when i move the throttle cable. So I am pretty much ruling out a fuel issue.
I put all new plugs, wires, ignition coil, cap & rotor on. The plug wires are all run correctly. (Triple checked)
It tries to start when i spray starter fluid in it, but doesn't once in in a while it'll somewhat backfire (Through the exhaust) when trying to start.
It was sitting for approx. 20 years, but I am fairly sure it ran when put in storage. (Was my Dad's)
Thanks for any help.

You didn't list if you changed the contact points - did you change the points?

Contact points gap should be set to 0.019" which should give you about 33* dwell. Hopefully changing the points will provide you w/ the ability to start the engine. Dwell angle adjusted through distributor window should be set to 30*. Ignition timing should be set to ~10*-12* BTDC. I have my '71 CS 350 cid set to 12* BTDC.

Put new points in had a car guy help me set the dwell. I think we have it at 30 degree. It runs very good at idle, but as soon as i give it gas it stalls out , or wants to stall out. There is a little bit of old gas mixed in with the new non-ethanol gas I put in. He is not real familiar with Quadrajet carbs. The carb has been rebuilt. It ran at idle for approx 25 - 30 min, then overheated. Should I invest in a fan shroud / did it come with one originally? There is no shroud currently on it. The radiator is recored by a very reputable radiator shop. Any other suggestions? Thanks ahead of time for all you're help.

Did you reset your timing to around 12*? Then adjust your a/f mixture screws for the highest rpm on your tach, then turn the screws in 1/8 turn.

I have to wire brush the timing guage. (On the engine block) I couldn't do it tonight.... got too late & engine too hot. I'm not a carb guy. Still fairly new at the old car hobby. I will call the guy who rebuilt the carb for me to help me with the carb. I think he can help me out with the timing as well. I do watch to try to learn though. HaHa. Do you think a fan shroud would help with the overheating, or was it just cause we let it run too long to adjust the dwell? Thanks Again.

I would try and get the engine tuned first. No, a/c cars came form the factory with a fixed 4 blade fan and no shroud. Does it help to add those items, sure.

Unfortunatly I found a gas leak at the fuel line coming into the carb, so I shut it down till I get another line.

It's just a hair over 12. Should I get it exactly 12 or do you think it's fine?

That should be fine. No need to get extremely precise with it.

Where can I find a pump to carb line? the ones i see on inlinetube.com doesn't seem to have the right bends in it. So either mine is bent wrong or the one online is wrong. I could always have someone bend me a new one, but I like things to look original. Does anyone have a pic of thiers' so I can compare?

For some reason inline tube cannot get those right. Most people bend their own.

Got a new line bent by a friend. It's not the original "shape", but it does not leak, so I'm happy. No overheating issues as of now. Took it up & down the driveway seems to run ok, but the manual drum brakes take forever to stop. Is there a power drum brake conversion? Where can I get one & approx. how much? Does it just involve adding a booster?
