1971 350 water pump
What’s the general concensous for a replacement? As far as I know mine is working fine but it’s a rust bucket. 71 Cutlass s with factory A/C; although somewhat removed.

If it's working ok then take it off and use a rotary wire brush and some type of rust remover. Give it a good rattle can paint job, color of your choosing and re-install. Now if it's shot then buy a Flow Kooler aluminum pump of the correct length, no more rust and it's an outstanding pump ..... $115 at Summit racing.

That pump has already been replaced likely not too long ago judging by the patina. There are lots of parts on your car you won't know the history of but you likely won't replace them. Take the pump off and check the impeller side. IF it's all crudded up then it can be cleaned or replaced. If it looks fine, clean the outside, paint it and reinstall with a new gasket. If it's not broke, don't fixit. I'd check the radiator to see if there's scaling deposits in there too.

I got it removed last night and the impeller looks good and clean; outside and bolts have a good caking of rust. Also pulled the Tstat housing and looks like my Tstat is stuck closed.

I went to torque all the bolts but one on the bottom decided to spin at the recommended 13 ft lbs. I tried using the other same sized bolts with the same results.
Are the smaller 1/4” bolts at the bottom of the pump just going through the timing chain cover or all the way through to the block?
