330 questions

I picked up a 330 the other day with 65000 miles. I initially picked it up just to for the crank, flywheel, and balancer. However, after hearing the engine run, I'm thinking I may just put it in my Olds powered Trans Am. I was wondering if the 330 is a good engine to use for auto-x? Will the brackets and pulley's from the 403 bolt directly to the 330?

Thanks
Mike

330s are good engines, they just have a slightly smaller bore which gives them 20 cubic inches less displacement.

As for the brackets, I think they will all bolt up. I am not 100% but I think all second gen Olds engines have bracket holes in the same locations.

Correct. All 1964-1990 SBOs are externally identical. The only POTENTIAL issue might be differences in mounting bosses on the intake - this depends on the specific intake you are using.

I'm going to use a spare edlebrock performer since I have to have an egr, and I'll put in a new HEI distributor. Also how can I tell if I need a 30* or 45* cam?
It came out of a 67 cutlass. How would the 330 handle running an entire course 2nd and 3rd gear? is the bottom end stronger than a 403? Is the loss of CI worth it?

If it's a '67 it's probably a 39* block.
Yes it's stronger than the 403 but a properly built 403 will handle more than 450hp with no problem.

OK, that's two. What are the other 328 questions?

That looks like the 320 HP high compression version. Premium fuel should be used.

If you're just gonna run it, maybe replace the oil pump and timing chain for good measure. Stick a set of full roller rockers, 1.7, for a little more power. That Performer will at least take 25lbs off the front end.

It also came out of a car with California Emissions. So... you'll need to put small plugs (I think pipe thread) into the holes between the spark plugs. That's where the A.I.R. pump used to pump air into it. Then, the oil fill tube is the taller (10"?) fill tube. If its not full of dents you can sell that for $75-100 to someone putting the three 2 bbl carbs on their car. Those were the only two applications for the tall oil fill tube. You can replace the fill tube with a more common short one, or even one from a newer engine. John

Just to confirm, the 1967 would have come factory with #4 heads. The 1966 would have had #3 heads.

Those aren't NPT ports, they are inverted flare, like a brake line. You need IFM (inverted flare male) plugs.

Thanks for clarifying Joe. I've got a set of heads with little brass plugs in them. Who knows, if they're the wrong thread a previous owner may have just torque them down and made them fit!

Canadian cars, at least my 81 Delta 88 307 had factory plugs installed. Great link Joe.
