Engaging fast idle on a Rochester

Hi, I have put my rebuilt quadrajet back on my rebuilt 350 and for some reason I cannot seem to engage the fast idle cam at a cold start while inside the car by pressing the gas pedal. If I try and manually do it under the hood by cranking the accelerator on the carb back it sets it no problem. Almost as if accelerator pedal is not fully working. Never had this problem before.

Choke seems to be working fine when I set the carb up by hand and it warms up and runs smooth. just can't seem to get it to start in high idle while in the car. Any thoughts?

Rebuilt 4bbl, rebuilt 350. Edelbrock low rise intake. My edelbrock carb worked with no problems, was able to start it in fast idle then have it kick down to low idle as it should but I love the quad.

when you did it by hand did you take the air cleaner off?

Sometimes an air cleaner can interfere with the choke flap arm - for example the little edelbrock pro-flow chrome triangle.

whatever air cleaner youre using, be sure that's not the issue.

Yes so I will try setting from in the car with cleaner off and engine cold. See if that's it.

That seemed to make a difference but I'll try it again tomorrow morning when I know the engine is completely cold. Funny never had this problem before and it's the same carb and same air cleaner

glad to help. I only ran into it once, with the edelbrock air cleaner I was using, but thought it might be worth checking.

in my case all I had to do was rotate the thing a little to clear the choke flap arm.

Are you sure that the throttle linkage and pedal are moving the throttle link through its full range of motion?

I like this ^^^^
I can't imagine anyone having to open the hood and take off the air cleaner to start the car everytime. Something's not set up right and I think Eric nailed it. If it's the same carb (reasonable assumption) and the same linkages there's no reason why it shouldn't work properly after the rebuild. I'm going out on a limb here and wondering if you took any before pics as a reference.

It should set when you press the pedal half way to the floor. If you are pumping the pedal it will release.

Eric, the start instructions for a 4bbl are (cold engine) - depress accelerator to the floor once only and release. Crank engine. I've had carbs set up so that the barest of sneezes on the accelerator will set the choke. Fortunately my carb is tight and the float bowl didn't drain overnight so BAM, instant start on the high idle cam.

Okay so updates. Started car cold this morning with air cleaner off and it started beautifully so it's definitely something going on with the linkage, will have to observe that while someone pumps the gas.
