Vacuum advance on a 83 H/O

My 83 has a vacuum advance on the distributor and I was wondering if this is correct for an 83 or has someone changed it out. It is a HEI unit. My manual says it should be with electronic timing after 81.

Even in Canada, they came with electronic advance, isn't factory. What carb is on it?

It has 17084287 quadrajet which I pretty well know isn't right for this car. Also has a performer manifold on the car. A previous owner has removed and the emission equipment from the engine. Still has the computer in the car but not sure what is left for it to control. Really would like to know what the carb came off of. Larry

Shows to be from an 86 Olds 307, Rochester 4 Barrel R4-M4MC; w/Open Loop (no Solenoid on Air Horn).

So will it be alright on my 83. What job does the solenoid on the air horn do. Is this the solenoid I'm looking for that bumps up the rpm when the air comp. kicks on?

No, not the same solenoid. I believe you have a non CC carb, and a standard HEI, with no emissions remaining as per your description. So I assume the engine basically runs like a like a pre-emission, non CC - V8. Some of your problem may be that your timing is too low, it's normal to set the engine a bit higher in rpm to account for the additional load of the compressor, if your timing is too low then the rpm drops considerably more with the load.

The part you need for your a/c is an Idle stop solenoid.

I found a used idle solenoid today and mounted it on the carb but it didn't have enough oomph to push the throttle lever. Guess I will keep looking. Thanks for all the info. Larry

Pretty sure even Canadian cars came with CCC carbs 86 and up, was optional before that. Just make sure there isn't a blue electrical connector on the passenger side front of the carb or it will run pig rich. Make sure your base timing is set at 20 degrees.
