Timing cover

Timing cover
I asked earlier about coolant in the oil. As I was repairing a timing cover leak I did notice corrosion at the top of the cover at the coolant ports. I thought I sealed it well there. Could coolant be getting in the oil there? Would I be best to just replace the cover. Engine has not really been ran very long, never overheated. Earlier post was oil, coolant problems. Thanks for the help. This is sons first car we are building together hoping to get on the road soon.

When I have the timing cover off, if there's corrosion I usually hit it with a 7" disk sander to flatten out the pitting before reassembling. If it's badly pitted, you'll have a difficult time getting a good seal.

What did you seal the cover/ block/ WP with?
Proper sealant such as Form-a-Gasket #2 would fill all such pits and seal.
I have seen rust pits so bad at the impeller area that it may leak thru there.
Of course, a new plate is the best solution.
Be prepared to test fit and modify to fit right, as a NEW new part may be made in China.
$80 - dirt cheap:

Might as well put a new timing set in there, eh?

Well I got the timing cover off. It has pitting around the coolant ports and some small grooves. drained engine oil it was thinner than normal. Looked kinda whitish tan color. Removed a drain plug on each side of the block to drain coolant. Hoping either a good reseal of the cover or should it be replaced? Any thoughts of it being intake or heads. It did not smoke at all and ran fine.
