Timing chain olds rocket 350

Hello everyone. I’m removing my water pump because it started leaking so then I started wondering if assuming my engine is original 70k miles what kind of timing chain came with this car from the factory ?
thanks

It would have had a nylon tooth camshaft gear from the factory. The teeth crack and eventually break off, fall into the oil pan and restrict the oil pump intake screen. The broken teeth also increase the chance of the chain "jumping" out of sync.

Changing the water pump puts you just a few bolts away from a timing set change. It's a good MAW project since you're there.

Would these be ok for a stock motor? I’d like to keep the car as stock as possible

Have you tried your local parts store where you would not have to pay shipping? I like Cloyes brand sets.

I think Cloyes is the best. When you have the timing cover off, check the nuts for the water pump. Some guys put new ones on and tack weld them to the backside of the timing cover.

Don't forget to re-install the oil slinger. People have been known to misplace it.

No, but some people like to loosen up the front two bolts on the pan, each side. Your call.

Search the forum and you'll find a couple good threads discussing the process. Although you "can" get the timing cover back on without doing anything else, there's a technique to it and I can tell you I won't do it again lol. You'll find details in the threads.

If you can, lift the engine a bit (don't need much) so you can loosen off the oil pan. Getting the timing chain back on and leak free is a lot easier that way.

Before reinstalling the front cover take a break. Go back and double check as mentioned the oil slinger is in place, the fuel pump eccentric is in place with the bolt tightened and that the gears are aligned correctly. Lastly take a picture to avoid second guessing yourself later .
